Everybody wants to embark on the road to success in business or in life! However, success means diverse things to different people. For some people, the road to success entails achieving whatever dreams that they desire. For others, it’s about health, wealth, winning, fame, self-improvement or social standing.
Success can bring pleasure, pride and a sense of fulfillment. But, sometimes your thoughts convince you that the success that you desire is impossible to achieve. If you aren’t careful, you can end up formulating a mental attitude that says, “I can’t do this.” or “I’ll never be successful.”
If you normally think this way whenever you want to try something new, then you are sure to fail. So, how can you make sure that your thoughts don’t sabotage your dreams? You do this by following 7 easy rules that will guide you on the road to success.
1. Set Significant SMART Goals
People who know exactly where they are headed are likely to succeed. This is because they know what goals they want to achieve and why they want to achieve them.
However, goals will only be achievable if they are significant or important to the goal setter. The goals must relate to what the goal setter considers to be the top priorities in their business, or in their life.
If you want to know how to be successful, you first need to identify the things that are the most important to you. You then need to set yourself SMART goals that are challenging yet achievable. Your goals must be relevant to the objectives you want to achieve.
What are SMART goals? SMART goals are: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and have a Time-frame.
“S” is for Specific.
The road to success is paved with “potholes”. To avoid these potholes, you need to be very specific about what goals you want to achieve and why you want to attain them. These goals should be based on personal achievements not on outcomes.
For example, your goal should state “I will increase my spending on upgrading my product in order to grow my business”. Not “I want my business to grow.”
Your goals should show you the way to success by defining precisely where you want to go and how and when you are going to get there. Generalized goals that don’t provide sufficient direction are unhelpful and can be a hindrance to success.
“M” is for Measurable
Your goals should include precise amounts, dates, and so on, so that you can measure your degree of success. If your goal is simply defined as “I want my business to grow.” How will you know if you have succeeded?
For short-term goals there should be some sense of urgency to achieve that goal. However, this will not work for long-term goals. Long-term goals should be broken up into several achievable short-term goals. Otherwise you will end up being burnt out before you ever reach your ultimate goal.
An example of a measurable goal is; “I will increase my spending by 15% on updating my product. This will grow my business by 25% by the end of the financial year.” This goal (which is in 2 parts) is very measurable because it contains measurable percentages as well as an end date.
You will then know whether you reached your goal at the end of the financial year. If not, you should be able to determine where things went wrong and correct them. If you do succeed, then you should congratulate yourself and celebrate your success.
“A” is for Achievable
Make sure that the goals you set are based around your personal strengths and weaknesses. Nevertheless, they must be challenging enough to maintain your interest in pursuing them. By the same token they must also be achievable.
Your ability to achieve a goal will depend on the obstacles you encounter and your limitations. Whilst there may be many obstacles on the road to success, most can be overcome with good planning. The proper allocation of time, effort, monetary funds and human resources are also required.
Limitations, on the other hand, usually cannot be overcome without a large investment. Setting goals without first overcoming limitations will result in failure. Limitations include such things as; lack of desire, not having the correct knowledge or skills, outdated technology, limited finances or incapable staff.
Once you understand the difference between your obstacles and your limitations, you should be able to set goals that are not restricted by your limitations.
“R” is for Relevant
Set goals that are relevant or important to you, as these will motivate you to do what you have to do in order to succeed. Your goals should be based around your strengths and weaknesses. They should be defined in such a way that they help you determine the direction in which you want your life or career to take.
Don’t set goals for yourself that you don’t really care about. If you do this, then you will be wasting your time as you won’t be motivated to put in the blood, sweat and tears that will be required to make these goals a reality. You will then end up being demoralized. This will reduce your confidence of being able to attain other goals in the future.
Your goals should be relevant to you and challenging enough that they require you to “raise the bar”. Your success once you reach them, will then bring you great satisfaction.
“T” is for Time Frame
Your goals must have a distinct time-frame. You will also require a clear action plan of all of the steps you will need to take along the road to success. Make sure that you schedule your time and resources effectively by prioritizing your goals in order of importance or urgency.
Setting goals isn’t a static process. Goals need to be reviewed and adjusted as new opportunities or problems pop up. This is especially important if your goals are very demanding, or if they are long-term goals that are far off into the future.
When setting goals, use the word “will” instead “would like”. For example, “By the end of November this year, I will lose 10% of my body weight.” Not “I would like to lose 10% of my body weight.”
The first statement has passion and you can “see” yourself losing 10% of your body weight by November. The second statement lacks drive. It doesn’t inspire you to put in the effort or sacrifices that will be required to lose 10% of your body weight.
Furthermore, the second statement lacks a time-frame so you don’t have a definite parameter in which to achieve your goal. When you are working on a deadline, your sense of urgency increases and success is more likely to be assured.
Write Down Your Goals
The physical act of writing down a goal makes it more real and tangible. By writing out and listing the individual steps you will take in order to reach each goal, you are planning and visualizing your success.
Then as you complete each step you cross it off your list. Doing this will help you realize that you are making progress down the road to success towards your ultimate goal.
Post your goals in visible places as a constant reminder to keep yourself on track. Place them on your computer monitor, in your diary, or on your refrigerator. Put them somewhere where you will see them and be reminded of them. This will remind you of your aspirations and keep them fresh in your mind.
Goal setting is an ongoing activity. This means that you will need to regularly review your goals and the steps that you need to take in order to achieve them.
This ensures that the actions you take along the way are relevant. It will also enable you to make changes as obstacles and opportunities present themselves.
Top athletes use the power of visualization to achieve their goals. They are trained to work on their personal strengths and weaknesses. By concentrating on building their strengths athletes can overcome their weaknesses.
Most athletes then visualize themselves doing everything they need to do in order to win at their chosen sport. Athletes that can visualize success, increase their chances for success. Visualization works for anyone who wants to succeed, and it can work for you too!
Your mind is a powerful tool that can determine your success or failure. When you have a clear, powerful picture in your mind of success, you will already have imagined yourself winning. The “taste” of success will give you the desire and resilience to take on and overcome any obstacles that get in the way of your goals.
Because your thoughts can affect outcomes, it is very important to get rid of any negative thoughts and feelings that will hamper your success. You do this by changing negative statements into positive statements.
For example, if you constantly say to yourself “This is too hard, I will never succeed.” then you have already stitched up your own fate to fail. However, if you change this to say “This is challenging, but with a bit of extra effort I can do this.” then guess what, you will succeed.
When you combine the visualization of your goals with positive thinking, you become full of positive energy. Your confidence increases. This allows you to more easily put in the effort to bridge the gap between wanting and achieving.
3. Utilize Resources
Before you can achieve your goals and succeed in life, you need to have the right skills, knowledge, imagination, talent and ability. Patience, perseverance, self-confidence, staff numbers, finances, time availability, may also be required to achieve your desired success. Without these, your dreams will remain out of your reach.
For example, if you want to start an online business you will need to know how to set up a website, how to choose a niche, all about search engine optimization, conversions, and other topics.
Mere desire won’t lead to success. Determine exactly what resources and assets you have at your disposal. Think about what other resources you will require to achieve your goal.
You may need to invest either financially, intellectually or physically in obtaining the additional resources. Without the correct resources implementing your goals will be difficult.
Your confidence and attitude also govern how much effort you put into obtaining your goals despite any setbacks you may encounter. In order to increase your confidence in yourself, you need to think positively about your ability to succeed.
If you don’t believe in yourself, your determination will waver whenever you encounter a setback. Positive thinking such as being passionate and excited about chasing your dreams will increase your self-motivation.
When you are excited about your goals and the journey on the road to success, you will more likely to succeed. You will be more motivated into putting your blood, sweat and tears into attaining the future that you desire.
On the other hand, thinking negatively or creating imaginary obstacles through fear of the unknown, will ensure that you fail.
When things fail or don’t turn out as expected, use your resources of patience and perseverance to try again. Or use your imagination to brainstorm new ideas and try something new or different.
YOU always have the choice as to which thoughts you focus on. You can choose to focus on thoughts and feelings that will hold you back, or you can focus on those that will move you forward.
5. Seize Opportunities
Life isn’t stagnated, although it may at times feel like it is. However, you can get ahead when you know how to be successful by being attuned to any breaks or opportunities that present themselves.
Time is one of life’s greatest opportunities that should never be taken for granted! Timely actions, or being in the right place at the right time allow you to seize the moment. Seize opportunities that present themselves to fast track your success.
Business opportunities may occur when circumstances create a need for a new product, service, or profession. They many occur due to environmental changes, updates in technology, or fluctuations in social trends.
They may also occur due to swings in consumer demand. Always be aware of changes that impact on your business so that you can take advantage of them as soon as they occur.
Take advantage of personal opportunities that will be advantageous to your life or business. Personal opportunities such as making new friends, traveling, updating or learning new skills, can increase the quality of life.
Starting up a business, buying property, investing in financial portfolios, or grabbing opportunities that may occur through job vacancies can improve your financial situation.
Know where you are headed through goal setting. Then you will be more likely to recognize any opportunities that arise, that will lead your life or your business forward.
In order to achieve goals that are far off in the future you need to stay motivated and focused. While long-term goals may be challenging and your interest may wavier, it is possible to keep them in your sights.
This is evident from the fact that scientists and medical researchers keep on going despite the perceived impossibly of their research. Many researchers work for many years or even decades pursuing goals that are far off into the future.
Progress is often dreadfully slow, and in most cases they know that success will not occur within their own lifetime. However, despite this they still find meaning in their work. Focusing on long-term goals helps them stay motivated to keep working steadily towards their goals.
Because of their determination and long-term focus, the world has benefited from scientific developments as well as life-saving developments in medical fields such as antibiotics, vaccines, MRI, cancer treatments, surgical procedures and many more.
So, how do researches stay motivated to put in their blood, sweat and tears into their research. What keeps them going especially when their goals seem to be out of their grasp? The answer is determination!
Determination can work for you too! Despite everyday distractions and other urgent tasks that you have to contend with, determination will help keep you motivated and focused on long-term goals.
Purpose and willpower will push you forward to learn, and to grow. People who maintain their determination can achieve more than those who give up after encountering setbacks.
So, whenever you think you’re ready to quit, use your determination to motivate you to reach your goals. Use the power of your mind to achieve your dreams, and succeed in life.
7. Desire and Commitment
- How committed are you to your goal for success?
- How important is success for your life or your business?
- What are you willing to sacrifice in order to achieve it?
Knowing how to be successful isn’t enough. In order to succeed in life or in business, you need to truly want it! This desire will help you to fully commit yourself, your time, and your energy.
Desire and commitment will inspire you to act. When you take positive action you bring about the results that you seek. However, if your actions fail, don’t wait around hoping that something or someone else will come along and fix it. And don’t drive yourself into stagnation or into despair! Instead, change your mind-set by thinking positively.
Then challenge yourself to take on any obstacles. Or solve the problems that prevent you from attaining your goals. Learn to brainstorm and think in a creative way. You will then soon discover solutions to problems that in the past eluded you.
Know what needs to be done and plan out each step. Commit to your plan by scheduling your time and by filling out your to-do-lists or your weekly calendar.
When you plan out each step, you will always know what you need to do to obtain your goal. Regularly review each step to ensure it is still relevant, or if it can be improved.
Desire for success will help you to take responsibility for your life or your business. It will help you invest your time and energy into doing whatever it takes to reach your goal.
The Road To Success
In order to achieve success you need to commit yourself to obtaining success. You need to desire success more than you dread the personal effort that you have to invest in reaching your goal.
Commit yourself to your goals, because this will help you make the sacrifices that are required to achieve success. Your desire for success will help you to do the things that you dread doing or to take on the things that you are afraid of doing.
No-one can do it for you, it’s all up to you! You can become complacent and wallow in despair. Or you can commit to your goals and give them your all!
